Coaching rules at the Us Open

The 2022 edition will be the first to allow coaches give instructions to their players.

They announced how the new coaching rules will be applied to the coaches and players in the last Grand Slam of the year.

These conditions will be applied to all events, including adapted tennis and juniors.

Where will coaching be allowed from?

Only from the box of the player's work team, where the coach, physical trainer, psychologist, physio or anyone close to the team generally sits.

If the coach prefers to sit elsewhere, coaching will only be allowes from the side of the court and not behind it.

Furthermore, this help from behind the players' chairs is not allowed, and coaches cannot move during the game. Basically, in the 3 stadiums of the US Open: Artur Ashe, Armstrong y Grandstand coaching is only allowed from the team box.

The coaching verbal may consist of a few words or short phrases, only when the player is at the same end of the court. It should be noted that conversations are not allowed...

The coaching no verbal is defined as discreet hand signals or gestures that don't distract the opponent.

As for the players, they cannot approach the coach to engage in conversation at any time, including changing sides, at the end of a set or if the opponent asks for medical attention or to go to the bathroom.

As far as coaches are concerned, they will not be able to speak to their players when they leave the field for any reason.

How many times can they intervene?

Unlimited As many times as necessary, but if verbal support, signals and/or gestures begin to interrupt the game or distract the opponent, the player may receive penalties.

We will see how these rules are imposed in a Grand Slam and we hope that they're applied in the correct way.
